After much research and preparation, I was finally able to use ExpressionEngine on a client’s site. The Employers Council on Flexible Compensation came to Matrix Group looking for a full-site content management system, and I thought that ExpressionEngine suited their needs best.

My role in this project was to take the sliced templates that another Front-End Developer completed and to implement the site using ExpressionEngine. I was also tasked with adding in the JavaScript functionality on the homepage. Once the implementation was complete, I also had to train the client on how to use it.

I definitely learned a lot from this implementation, and I know what things I would have done differently, but overall, it turned out to be a successful site.

The work section pulls in her most recent posts that are categorized as work, and it uses jQuery to allow the user to quickly flip through them. A user without JavaScript enabled is also able to look through her portfolio as well.

The contact page also uses some custom jQuery and AJAX to submit the form. Again, the contact form will still work if a user has JavaScript disabled.

Since The National Park Foundation is one of my company’s clients, I had the pleasure of slicing and implementing the website for the lighting of the National Christmas Tree.

I was able to add in some pretty cool jQuery functionality in various places of the site. On the homepage, I added in some rotating branding images, similar to the ones that I created for the National Park Foundation Leadership Summit website.

I also added the standard share this and send to friend functionality that we have been implementing on a lot of sites recently. Finally, for the display of the Christmas Pathway Of Peace, I used jQuery clone to create a lightbox display and make it easy to see all of the state ornaments.

We also worked with a third party company to do a live webcast of the lighting. In addition, we created a flash game to decorate your own Christmas tree and an interactive timeline. While, I wasn’t really a part of creating that, I did help to give some feedback.

Our company website was well overdue for a redesign. Finally, we forced ourselves to make some time and just do it. After a long strategy and information architecture process, we finalized a design, and I was able to get to work.

My role was to slice and implement the entire site, with some programmer assistance on the CMS integration. I used the Dean Edwards’ IE7 scripts for PNG support in IE6, sIFR for some headings and quotes, and a lot of jQuery.

I did some cool things with jQuery on the calendar of events, and on the portfolio. Try filtering the portfolio pieces and then clicking on one of the thumbnails. The modal window is a very modified version of Facebox.

The site also features the standard send to friend and share this features that I have created for other sites.

There are also some other cool little things at various places around the site like the images on the culture page and reCAPTCHA on the contact form. The site is not huge, so I would say it is well worth clicking around for a bit.

The MatriX Files is a blog for the CEO of my company, Matrix Group International. This blog has been in the works for quite a while. It is definitely hard to do internal projects when you have so many client projects going on.

The blog is powered by WordPress, and uses multiple loops and custom fields. Since the blog takes advantage of PNGs, it uses the Dean Edwards’ IE7 scripts.

My role in this project was to slice the design and implement the blog. I also utilized jQuery to make the favorites in the sidebar a little more interesting using previous and next links to read them, but the CEO nixed it and elected to just display them. I’m hoping that I will be able to add it back in later. I also used jQuery to show the share this options when you click on the share link associated with each blog post.

The design is a modified version of the Grid Focus theme. It was quite a long process developing the site, but it was really my first experience fully utilizing WordPress custom fields.

My role in this project was to modify the theme to the client’s liking and to customize WordPress to fulfill the requirements of the project. This project really helped me to get a better understand of how to take customizing WordPress to the next level.

Mount Vernon wanted to create a blog to provide resources for their Teachers & Students. They are one of our clients that kind of seem more willing to take chances on their designs. The design was done by ex Front-End Developer turned Designer, Nate Eagle.

The design was definitely a challenge to slice, but through a creative use of PNGs, I made it happen. Since I was using PNGs, I of course used the Dean Edwards IE7 Scripts to account for Internet Explorer 6.

Mount Vernon was offering framed George Washington portraits to schools to display, and I helped to develop a section of the website that enabled Mount Vernon to show which schools had requested and received the portrait. We created individual Google Maps for each state since there were thousands of schools that participated!

My role in this project was to slice the site, create the WordPress theme, help to implement the Google Maps, and train the client on WordPress.

Direct Selling 411 is a consumer site that my company developed for the Direct Selling Association. My company did not do the design, but we did the information architecture. The interesting part of this project is that the entire site is powered by WordPress.

My role in the project was to slice the site and integrate it into WordPress. The decision to power the site by WordPress was a great decision because instead of having a static site and a separate WordPress blog, I thought it would be much easier to tweak WordPress to fit the needs of the client. In the end, the decision to power everything by WordPress gives the Direct Selling Association much more control over the content. The slice was not too complex, and I would say the only thing of note is that I used the Dean Edwards IE7 scripts to account for IE6’s deficiencies.

Makeup Bizz is a site I developed for my mom’s friend, who works as a makeup artist part time. I actually created a site for her during my senior year of college (before I really knew what I was doing), and it was not good. I volunteered to redesign her site because I felt bad about how terrible it was. I am much more happy with this design; I feel like it has kind of like a classic feel to it.

There was one design element that the client wanted me to carry over: the lipstick smudge on the right hand side. I think it works pretty well on the new site because it gives the site more balance.

My role in this project was everything: the design, the slicing, the JavaScript image rotator on the homepage, and the contact form. I also used sIFR on the homepage to have the words Elegance. Style over top of the branding images. I used the Dean Edwards’ IE7 scripts and a lightbox effect for the portfolio as well.

InstallNET has been a site we have been developing for quite some time. Not only was our role to redesign and restructure their public site, but they also have a very complex admin site that is used for their Customers and Service Providers.

My role in both of these was to slice and implement. On the homepage, I created a little rotating box that rotates between 3 different sections of content. Along with it being a timed rotation, you can also click through using the previous and next arrows.

I also created a Google Map showing all of their locations across the country. This was my first Google Map project where I wasn’t just adding 1 or 2 points. I had to create a JavaScript function so that it did not become crazy to manage. We at first were going to use Google MyMaps, but quickly found out that there is a limit to how many you can display at one time.

I also setup a little fun facts box on the subpages that randomly selects a fun fact from the database, then you can click previous and next to get more via an AJAX request.

I have done a lot of work for the National Park Foundation recently, and it has been awesome. Creating sites for something that is a part of all Americans has really been fulfilling. After they finished with their Leadership Summit, we had to get right back to work on the main website.

My role in the project was to slice it and implement it. We used a lot of similar stylings from the Leadership Summit website. Again I used sIFR headings and the Dean Edwards IE7 scripts.

A couple of other interesting pieces is the search in the upper right. That is actually pulling results from their Google Mini, returning it in XML, and then I am parsing it into the nicely layed out search results. That was my first experience with a Google Mini, and it took a little time to figure out.

Another interesting piece is the Stories and Profiles section on the subpages. This is randomly pulling an entry from the content management system, then you can click previous and next to return more stories via an AJAX request.

The standard Email to a Friend functionality that I created is also on the left hand side in the Share This section.

Awards

I am very pleased to report that the National Park Foundation website won an Interactive Media Award in the category of Outstanding Achievement. The site score 470 out of 500 possible points.

The Worldwide Breast Cancer site was something that I spent a lot of time on. While on a forum, I saw someone add an entry about needing help creating some CSS templates for a breast cancer awareness site. I was interested and didn’t have too much going on at the time, so I figured it was a good cause to donate my time to.

My role in the site was to slice it. This was quite a challenging slice because of all of rounded corners and little intricacies. We used siFR for some headings, and also the Dean Edwards IE7 scripts.

Then, I recommended that we implement the entire site using Wordpress. I thought it would be much easier to manage. So that took some time to get everything integrated and get the navigation working, but everything turned out very well. So sign up, and find out more about breast cancer awareness.

My role in this project was to slice the design. Nothing too crazy in this design. A couple of things to note are that I used sIFR for the headings, and I also used the Dean Edwards IE7 scripts to make IE6 more standards compliant.

MatrixMaxx is the Association Management Software that my company, Matrix Group International offers. Maxx always had a lot of power on the backend, but everything was siloed, and the display was not much to look at. But we finally decided to totally revamp the front-end and make it much more usable for our clients.

We spent a lot of time talking to current users and figuring out what the liked and disliked. There was a long design process with lots of tweaks. Then finally, MatrixMaxx 7.2 was ready to go.

My role in this project was to be involved in the user interviews, helping to decide on the structure, and slicing the site. The slice was definitely challenging because of all of the rounded corners, but don’t worry, I made it bulletproof.

The screenshot is of our BETA version for the National Association of Fun Companies. I apologize but I cannot give a link, but to find out more information, visit the Association Management Software page on my company’s website.

There is so much to say about the National Park Foundation Leadership Summit site. It’s my baby. It was all mine! Once the design was completed, I sliced the site. I implemented the site. I implemented our custom CMS. It was mine…all mine!

In addition to using the Dean Edward’s IE7 Scripts, I made heavy use of jQuery. The homepage has the most of it. Go ahead, try clicking on the arrows on the box that houses the speakers. Or try clicking on the thumbnails that are overlaying the larger branding image. Maybe you want to sign up for the E-News?

No, you want to send the speakers page to a friend. Go ahead, click the link and scroll down to Send to a Friend on the right hand column.

Are you wondering how the text of the headers on the homepage are so nice? Yeah those are sIFR. This site is kind of a culmination of my web development skills. Like I said, it’s my baby.

Awards

I am also pleased to report that this site won an Outstanding Achievement Internet Advertising Competition Award for Outstanding Microsite/landing page.

Powerline Safety is a partnership to promote best practices in powerline safety (you probably would have never guessed that). This proved to be quite an interesting project to slice because of all of the lovely rounded squared off corners. Of course the background on the body is also not a solid background color so I had to use PNGs for the corners.

Another challenge was the indentation on the navigation on the subpages. I did not want to have to create a bunch of different indentations, so I used a couple of empty spans to create the effect. Again, I used the Dean Edward’s IE7 Scripts to account for the poorness of IE6.

My roles on this project were to slice the design and to do some of the implementation.

URAC is an independent health care accreditation company. It was also my first official slice that I ever have done. It was the first time that I was handed a PSD file, not designed by me, and was told to make it into a website. All in all, I think it turned out pretty well.

The first design approved was basically a Frankenstein design made up of a bunch of other comps that we had created. In my opinion, it wasn’t anything to write home about. Luckily, our CEO stepped in a said that we could do better.

So we went back in, created something brand new, without using design elements from other comps, and I think it turned out so much better.

This was also the first .NET site that we implemented, so it was interesting and challenging to do that for the first time as well.

My roles in this project were to slice the design, create templates, and do the implementation. Definitely an enjoyable first project.

The Sapphire Beach Vacation Club is a site that I developed for my girlfriend’s father. He has two condos in St. Thomas, and he wanted a website to help him advertise the condos.

This was the first site that I have developed that is completely powered by Wordpress. I’ve heard so many great things about it being used as a CMS, so I figured now was the time to start.

It was a dream to work with. I used the Page functionality to control all of the site.

The Design

The site is based on a 5-column, 150px wide grid. This was the first site that I have ever strictly adhered to that. It definitely makes adding things like pullquotes and images easier because then you know what widths you have to work with.

When I first thought about the design, for some reason I instantly thought about a polaroid. Using a brush in Photoshop, I was able to create the tilted polaroid affect. Then I used the right hand column to have images of the properties that open up in a lightbox.

I think some of the content formatting still needs some work, but overall I’m pretty happy with the site.

This is another example of one of my better sites. My girlfriend was a cheerleader for the Dickinson College Red Devils, and they had a website that just hurt my eyes. So I volunteered to redesign it for her.

I designed it once for her, before I was good at CSS, and I hated it. So a few months later, I asked if I could redo it, and I think it turned out so much better.

The most notable part of this site is Dan Cederholm’s Sliding Faux Columns that I got from Bulletproof Web Design. This book is a definite must read for anyone trying to get into flexible CSS and XHTML. It really made me change the way that I designed websites. I also incorporated a lightbox on the photos page.

Some of the pages on the site have since been updated by someone with less knowledge of web standards.

Ahh so much to say about this site. During the 2nd semester of my senior year in college, we had to complete a senior project. The guidelines were to find a client, and do something for them. That was it pretty much. I was stuck on ideas and did not really even know where to begin.

Enter my friend Brian.

Brian had been talking about creating a Facebook/MySpace type community, but for college musicians and fans. He did not really have the web experience to do it, so we agreed that I would undertake it as my senior project. Now this was definitely way over my head, but I had to get it done to get the grade.

So I ordered Larry Ullman’s PHP and MySQL for Dynamic Web Sites, and it was one of my best purchases ever. This book was a great starting point for me, and I have since fallen in love with PHP.

The College Forecast has many features. Users can register as artists or fans, create a profile, participate in the forum, and listen to music uploaded by the college musicians. There is a top ten list, newest songs list, artist of the month, and much more. Needless to say, I got a 100% on the project.

This site really is one of the best examples of what I am currently capable of. It is written all in PHP with a MySQL backend, and valid XHTML and CSS on the front-side. I love the Sliding Doors tab navigation along with the color scheme. I also really like the musician silhouettes that I used in the header.

I had been maintaining it for a while, but I had to tell my friend that I could no longer support it. It was very time consuming, and I did not see the possibility of success in the future. While the site is still running, I am not sure about how active the users are.
